Post COP-17 Workshop held

Post COP-17, WorkshopPost-COP17 workshop was successful in sharing overview of Durban process and outcomes in clear picture and way ahead for Nepal among diverse stakeholders.

 The half day program was organized on January 6, 2012 in Kathmandu. The main objective of program was to facilitate the debate to strengthen the effectiveness of Nepal's delegation in future COPs and to share the outcome of Durban conference. The program started with the welcome remarks by Mr. Bhushan Tuladhar, Coordinator of CCNN and address by Hon. Parmila Rai, Member of Constitution Assemby and Hon. Hem Raj Tater, Minister, Ministry of Environment. Mr Tater emphasized on the need for homework before the negotiations and importance of including experts in the negotiation team. " Nepal needs to start preparation for COP 18 immediately", Minister said.

In a technical session, Mr. Ugan Manandhar from WWF Nepal presented with overall insight to Durban process and outcomes in bigger picture. The technical session was followed by panel discussion. The panel was chaired by Mr. Krishna Gyawali, Secretary of Ministry of Environment and facilitated by Manjeet Dhakal, Program Director, CEN. The panel included different experts and government bureaucrats involved in COP process. The panel discussion covered issues of COP 17 such as REDD, adaptation, finance, mountain issues. Mr. Batu Krishna Uprety, Joint secretary of Ministry of Environment one of the panelist explained the role of government in COP process and outcomes.

The program was very interactive with the floor open for discussion to distinguished stakeholders present along with the panel discussion.

 The Post COP 17 Sharing Workshop was successful in bringing more than 90 representatives from different government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sectors, research and academic institutions, federations/alliances and media in a single platform for discussion on climate change issues, COP 17 outcome, its implication for Nepal and the way forward for strengthening Nepal's position in UNFCCC negotiation process.

 The recommendations and insights resulted through the deliberations during the program is expected to be helpful and as the guideline for the government and the civil society organizations to work towards achieving the intended capacity strengthening goals and evaluating the progress made in the future. The format of the program was also unique in itself such that the discussions were issue based and focused on strengthening Nepal's capacity for UNFCCC negotiations. Many participants expressed that such program should be continued and held on a regular basis. The workshop was supported by Oxfam, European Commission and ISET-Nepal.
