Youth Consultation on NAPA Held

Aiming to inform, promote engagement and sensitize youths on National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) and other climate change initiatives, Ministry of Environment (MoE) held a youth consultation meetings on 26th June 2009 at Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation Complex (DNPWC), Babarmahal, Kathamndu, Nepal.

Mr. Purshuttam Ghimire, Joint secretary of MoE and Focal Person of UNFCCC welcomed the participants and highlighted the objectives and needs of consultation with different stakeholders.

The objectives, needs and aspirations of NAPA project were highlighted by Mr. Batu Krishna Uprety, under-secretary of MoE, in his presentation "Introduction to NAPA Project".  He also highlighted the goals and components of NAPA project.

"Preparation of NAPA project, knowledge management/learning platform and developing multi-stakeholders framework of action are the three major components of NAPA project", he said. He further highlighted the implementing and working modality for NAPA project.

The presentation was followed by open discussion on NAPA project. Youths suggested MoE to define and hand the role of youths in building NAPA project.

40 youths from different organizations and institutions attended the program. Clean Energy Nepal –Nepalese Youth for Climate Action facilitated the youth participation in the program.

MoE has now taken lead in implementing National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA). The government of Nepal is using the NAPA to create a sustainable framework for national climate change action, which can result in swift and well-coordinated follow-up to the NAPA priorities identified. It also aims to provide basis for the development of a multi stakeholder framework on climate change action, ensuring that the NAPA-related stakeholder processes are institutionalized and backed up by dedicated knowledge management and learning platform. In this way, the NAPA will form the basis of, and support for, a wider strategy for climate resilient, low carbon development, with which other climate change processes in Nepal can be aligned.
